P is often neglected when it comes to handmade clothes. Let's face it...most boys' clothing isn't that fun to make. Strangely enough, he's probably my most appreciative "client". Project Run & Play's "Boys Week" was the perfect excuse to do some sewing for my boy.

You know you've sewn a winner when the recipient asks to wear the outfit to school the next day.:) I'm going to do my best to sew more for my son this year. I already have another project in the works.

Shirt Pattern: Ottobre Design 04/12 #38 Rock-X Striped T-shirt

Fabric: Burgundy and gray striped knit from Girl Charlee, gray ribbing and turquoise knit from my stash
Mods: Instead of the "Rock." applique shown in the magazine, I did a wave.
I used turquoise thread at the neckline, sleeves, and hem to add a little interest and also to tie in with the turquoise wave applique.
Let me tell you a little about P. He is 11, almost 12 years old and doesn't care too much about what he's wearing. But when he does have an opinion, you'd better listen up! When it comes to jeans, he doesn't like them to be "skinny" or to have any funky details. This pattern is a slim cut and has some not so typical details on the back. So, I double triple checked with P before tracing it off.
The jeans fit him perfectly!

Wow, Cindy! The shirt and jeans are awesome. I'm seriously in love with the jeans. Such nice work. I've been thinking about trying out an issue of Ottobre for a while - this may just push me over the edge. Also, thanks for the tips on inspiration for sewing for boys.
ReplyDeleteHe's wearing the outfit today, Thanks.:) I really like Ottobre. There's a small learning curve with the tracing, adding seam allowances, and to the point directions but once you figure them out there's nothing you can't sew!

I don't have anything to share for boys week, it was just way too busy of a week, so no kids clothes sewing, with no school Monday & chaperoning 2 days in a row on school field trips... maybe I'll sew along for one more challenge... how about you? do you plan to sew along for the rest of the challenges?

ReplyDeleteHe sounds like my son. My son is eight and he doesn't care much about clothes but thy have to be comfortable to him. He does like when I make him things. With two little girls at home his stuff can end up taking a back seat. I need to get better about that.

DeleteI'm SO impressed! People complain that they can't sew for boys but CLEARLY you've proved them all wrong! He even wears jeans his mom made. He's awesome! The outfit is all perfect as well.

I am so impressed with your sewing! The outfit is perfectly made and so appropriate for a boy his age. What I find most impressive, is that you made him jeans! Wow! Jeans that are full of special details that he will love to wear.
